$20 Gold Saint Gauden Coins
Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned to redesign the $20 US Gold Piece (Liberty Head) in 1907. The new design was first cast in a high relief die that made it appear to jump off the coin. This was later modified with a lower relief mint die. Only 11,250 of the high relief Saint Gauden $20 gold piece were minted. These coins also have the date in Roman Numerals. Only 2,000-3000 of the high relief Gold Coins are known to exist today.
The 1927 D is extremely rare. Even though 180,000 coins were minted, almost all of them were melted down following the Gold Confiscation Act of 1933.
As a result, many of the Saint Gauden $20 Gold Pieces with the 1920’s mint marks are rare.
The 1933 Saint Gauden $20 gold piece was also melted down with only a few survivors. This coin made headlines when a small stash was found and the collectors were accused of holding them illegally.
