$20 US Gold Liberty Coins

California Gold was used to make the $20 Gold Liberty Head, First Minted in 1850.  .  The Gold Coronet Head Liberty were coined through 1907

The Three Subtypes of the Gold Coronet series include:

• The first series were minted until 1866 .
• The reverse of the Gold Eagles added  IN GOD WE TRUST.
• In 1877, The Liberty’s bust was enhanced and twenty dollars was spelled out in full. This third subtype lasted until  1907, when the coin was discontinued.

On the Type 1 issues of 1850-66 the hair lacks detail. New Orleans  minted coins were also not struck properly on their highpoints.  

The Type 2 issues of 1866-76 are better defined, with the exception of the Carson City pieces which also lack details.

Type 3 Coronet $20 gold double eagle coins minted 1877-1907, were the best quality and are the most likely to surface in uncirculated condition. Many of these gold coins were held in reserve by the government during WW2 and never circulated like previous issues.

Cleaned Coins drop the grade to the bottom. Bag marks are common as well as expected for most of these coins.
